The cicada speaks to me of transformation, of patience, and of a beauty that bursts forth suddenly after a long silence.

For years, it remains hidden underground, still and waiting. Then one day, it emerges and sings — revealing itself to the world for a brief but full and essential moment.
That’s what fascinates me: its ability to live the moment intensely, to embody rebirth, freedom, and a kind of art that, though born in an instant, leaves a lasting trace.
In this mosaic, I wanted to tell that story.
The body of the cicada takes shape through green and grey Venetian enamels, while the wings shimmer in Venetian gold (24K gold leaf) — light and precious. It rests on a piece of aged wood with a white patina, as if time itself had paused.
To me, the cicada also symbolizes the quiet space I often feel before inspiration arrives — a silent, almost still void — and then suddenly, something ignites. Like a flash, I know exactly what to create; I feel the right moment has come.
And so it is born: fragile and strong, light and shadow, past and present.

Each of my mosaics is born from an encounter with the wood: cleaned, brushed, restored, and always protected with an anti-woodworm treatment. Its grain, shapes, colors, and traces of time inspire the subject and guide the composition. The wood does not merely host the mosaic; it becomes an essential part of it, dialoguing with the artwork and completing it with its own story.

Materials: Venetian mixed smalti, Venetian antique yellow gold (24K gold leaf), artistic glass.
