A small work, precious in both its materials and its meaning.
On an antique piece of restored wood, still marked by its own history, I created a fish using Venetian smalti and Venetian gold, leaving untouched an unexpected presence: a round, ring-shaped iron handle, marked by rust and the passage of time.
I did not want to conceal it.
On the contrary, it became part of the artwork.
It is the portal.
And the fish, an ancient symbol of life, movement and transformation, seems to be passing through it at the very moment something is beginning to open.
I called this work “Fish at the Portal” because, as I was creating it, I realized that it was also telling the story of my own present: a passage towards new situations, new encounters, different professional dynamics, and possibilities yet to be discovered.
Perhaps some coincidences appear when we are ready to recognize them.
Worn iron meets gold.
The wood carries the memory of time.
The mosaic gathers fragments and transforms them into a new harmony.
And that little fish seems to whisper that every portal is not merely a threshold to cross, but a promise of movement.
A unique, entirely hand-crafted piece, where the preciousness of Venetian smalti and gold meets the imperfect beauty of ancient material.
Every material preserves a memory.
Every threshold holds the possibility of a new beginning.
Each of my mosaics is born from an encounter with the wood: cleaned, brushed, restored, and always protected with an anti-woodworm treatment. Its grain, shapes, colors, and traces of time inspire the subject and guide the composition. The wood does not merely host the mosaic; it becomes an essential part of it, dialoguing with the artwork and completing it with its own story.
Materials: Mixed Venetian smalti, yellow Venetian gold (24K gold leaf), artistic glass.
