For years, I had nurtured the idea of creating a mosaic with a porthole as its central element. All I was missing was the right one. When I finally found it, I bought it on instinct, without yet knowing what subject would come to life within it.

I thought of the sea, of fish… then one night, I dreamt of an octopus. It was there, watching me from behind the porthole, as it embraced the corroded wood of a sunken ship in the depths.
To bring that vision to life, I created the octopus’s head on a concave stainless steel base, precisely fixed inside the porthole. It was an extremely meticulous task, where every tile played a vital role.
The tentacles emerge from the edge of the wood, giving the impression of coming out from behind the panel. I wanted them to appear as if they were grasping the remains of the submerged vessel with strength. This detail adds depth, movement, and a powerful expressive energy to the entire composition.

The mosaic was made using the direct technique on a wooden panel.

Materials: Mixed Venetian smalti, double-sided yellow Venetian gold (24K gold leaf), artistic glass, artistic ceramic, rubber.
