I created this mosaic bee on an old piece of wood, where the surviving traces of paint still tell a previous story. I like to imagine the bee landing right there, on something alive, as if that weathered surface still had a breath of its own.

To create the piece, I chose antiqued Venetian yellow gold, mixed enamels, and art glass rods, which I cut one by one and arranged carefully to recreate the effect of the fur beneath the bee’s head. The resulting texture is almost tactile: the light bounces off the tesserae, making the bee appear as if it’s truly vibrating, ready to take flight.
The bee, beyond its natural beauty, carries a strong symbolic meaning: it represents diligence, sweetness, community, harmony, and regeneration. In many traditions it is seen as a bridge between the visible and the invisible, able to transform what is raw into something precious, just as honey is born from a flower. It is an archetype of creativity, alchemy, and rebirth, a small luminous being that reminds us of the importance of following our purpose with dedication and lightness.
This piece is meant as a tribute to all of this: to life that persists, to the beauty that grows from the patient work of the hands, and to the quiet magic the bee carries with it every time it chooses a place to rest.

Each of my mosaics is born from an encounter with the wood: cleaned, brushed, restored, and always protected with an anti-woodworm treatment. Its grain, shapes, colors, and traces of time inspire the subject and guide the composition. The wood does not merely host the mosaic; it becomes an essential part of it, dialoguing with the artwork and completing it with its own story.

Materials: Venetian mixed smalti, Venetian antique yellow gold (24K gold leaf), artistic glass, artistic ceramics.
